Dealing With Stress

Almost everyone complains they are stressed from

time to time. There is actually 'good' stress -- the

kind of tension caused by participating in an athletic

event or by delivering a work presentation.

Successfully making it through these types of temporary stressful situations gives us confidence and helps us to accomplish our goals.

But stress is problematic when it becomes chronic. Stressful situations such as lingering money problems, a difficult job environment and marital woes can poentially lead to excess anxiety and depressive disorders. Doctors have connected chronic stress to heart disease and stroke.

If you believe you are chronically stressed, there are ways in which to manage your stress and possibly relieve the tension. Professional therapy is certainly one option for those in need. Less expensive anti-stress activities that may help include:

* There are events you simply cannot control.'Type A' personalities who insist on controlling too many aspects of their life are often more likely to be affected by stress. Understand that you simply cannot control everything.
* Keep a positive attitude. Easier said than done, right? But one can dwell on the negatives too frequently. It's best to look for the silver linings whenever possible.
* Practice some form of relaxation. Some people choose yoga; others meditate; others play guitar. Whatever relaxes you is good (as long as it's legal). Find your outlet and make time for it.
* Steer clear of drugs and alcohol. No need to really elaborate on this one too much.
* Let it go! If you feel passionate about an issue, state your case and let your opinion be heard. But if you're not getting your way, let it slide. Not every issue is worth the battle.
* Friends and family offer good sounding boards. Don't feel like you always have to face adversity alone. Friends and family are often there to lend you their support.
* Exercise. The stronger your body and your mind, the easier it will be to ward off the impact of stress.
* Eat well. Avoid junk food, eat balanced meals, don't snack late at night.
* Get plenty of sleep. Allow your body to recharge.
